I loved my day at the Thai Akha Kitchen cooking school. I was thrilled that we got to make 11 dishes - including three Akha ones. We had the coolest instructor Jay, and the day was well organised with non-stop cooking and eating over a full morning and pretty much the whole afternoon. Our group was small, and after a pickup we head to the market to get ingredients and try a few stalls. It's such a more authentic experience in this one, versus the touristy-markets. The cooking school is centrally based and well equipped for the day. Ingredients are all ready and explained, feel free to ask as many questions. There's lots of nice touches to the experience, including getting a little gift of spices and a recipe book both in hardcopy or PDF. Really thrilled with Thai Akha Kitchen, would easily recommend.read more

Best cooking school ever! We booked the morning class and they picked us up from our hotel to the venue. Our teacher Jay then took us for a tour in the market, where we learnt all the ingredients (including all the herbs and spices) needed for the dishes that we cooked later. From that tour we already got to smell, touch and taste some of the ingredients. It was a wonderful start! Afterwards we headed back to the kitchen and started cooking. We were learning a lot more dishes than we expected! First of all, we got to learn TWO appetizers, TWO desserts, THREE main dishes and also THREE Akha dishes. Akha is one of the traditional Thai tribes that lives in the mountain of northern Thailand. It was so amazing to learn all the main dishes and the Akha dishes, they all tasted heavenly! Jay is so helpful and nice, we couldn't expect a better teacher than he is. Being an Akha person himself, he told us a lot about the tribe so we were learning about his culture too! The whole session runs smoothly, it just leaves good memories! Highly recommended.read more

This is a great cooking class experience. J is super patient and polite! Great teacher. My wife and I booked an evening class. There was so much food that we had to ask for ways to bring it back to our hotel. I would recommend this class to anyone. Thanks J for an awesome experience! (Bring bug spray for evening mosquitos!)

Highly recommend

Highly recommend the morning class! The visit to the market was a fun added bonus! Great instructor – very helpful and funny. He also made sure to ask about any dietary restrictions. The recipes were simple enough for beginners and SO yummy!

Best cooking class EVER

Started the day by going to the local market and tried about a dozen local fruits and veggies. The 11-course meal was incredible and completely individualized- got to choose between a couple choices 3 or 4 of the 11 meals. Absolutely highly recommend this class! Was a great way to get to know the Thai culture and food!

Great day

My wife and I were in the morning class on 11 Dec with two other couples we are traveling with. Our instructor took us through a very interesting and unique Thai local market and exposed us to many new Thai foods and delicacies. The cooking portion of the class was well taught, monitored and tailored to a novice cooking skill level. No advanced skills needed.

Great way to spend a day!

All of the food was incredible. Our instructor was a great teacher and was very informative and helpful throughout the day. The dishes were made in an order where we were constantly cooking or eating, never just sitting and waiting for things to be done. It was so fun!

Fantastic Cooking School!

You will cook 11 small meals in total. Yes, you read that right. You can choose from a variety of options in certain menu categories (e.g. massaman curry versus green curry), but some of the menus are standard/consistent for everyone (e.g. spring rolls and papaya salad). You will prepare about 1 to 3 meals at a time and then stop to eat. While you’re eating, Jai and his team will clean up/prep, and then you will be prompted to cook the next set. On your final round, you will be taken inside to all eat together (in the AC, Woohoo!). Overall, we had a wonderful experience!

Excellent!

I think it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the number of cooking classes in Chiang Mai. I think one thing that sets this class apart is that you get to cook some of the traditional Akha dishes. These actually ended up being some of my favorites, and they are definitely dishes I will take home with me. Cheers!

Go in the morning!

My husband and I attended the morning class rather than the evening class, as we wanted the opportunity to go to the market to help buy the food for the day (I don’t believe you get to do this in the night class).

Wonderful time and experience

The instructor is awesome! He’s super knowledgeable on cooking, very friendly, and happy to help if you need it. The tour of the market was incredible, and I was definitely taking mental notes to see if I can find some of the fruits and vegetables at home in the US.

Great

The class was great. We got to make/taste a range of dishes. Really enjoyed making the curry paste from scratch and the stir fry.
